Either and both are not masters of disguise! They can be pronouns; And if so, they are still singularly so. Or they can be part of a two-part conjunction (or not. ni) combine two or more subjects. In this case, the verb must correspond to the near subject. The problem with grammatical rules from the point of view of modern linguistics is that many rules are not absolute.
